Skipping

Skip, hop and jump to it!

‘I wasn’t doing anything!’ said Wesley, standing up, grabbing the bag of food and stepping out of Margot’s room. He ran down the stairs to the front door and started lacing his neon-green trainers. I flew down the steps after him.

‘Yes, you were! I can’t believe you’d do that, Wesley!’ I said, bending down beside him and pushing my feet into my shoes. ‘Those are her private thoughts! Imagine if she did that to you? You would be furious – and rightly so! What you did is so against the code, Wesley. I might have to take action.’

‘I couldn’t help it,’ he said. ‘She never lets us look when she’s writing her spy notes – you know I think she’s sus. I just wanted to know. Confirmation. Don’t shout at me, all right? Those little coloured notes stood out in her well-bleak house. They hypnotized me and pulled me in. How could I stop them?’ Wesley opened the front door. ‘If you’re gonna blame anyone, blame Margot.’

‘Blame Margot for what?’ she said, standing by her porch. Wesley caught his breath and stared at me. His eyes begged me not to tell her what he’d done.

‘Ah, erm.’ I coughed and thought on my feet. ‘Blame Margot for my hands being so slippery and fresh,’ I said, putting them up to her face and feeling terrible that I’d woven myself into Wesley’s web of lies. ‘That hand cream of yours is something special.’ I chuckled unconvincingly.

‘It’s good, right?’ she said. ‘Super moisturizing. My mum gives me a tube every time I go back to London.’ Margot rolled her eyes. ‘I’ve told her she doesn’t need to keep giving me things. Just some time.’ She blinked. ‘And attention. Anyway, who cares about cream right now, hmmm?’ She clapped her hands. ‘Are you excited to spend time with Felix and Audrey, and eat? Dad wanted me to stay after church and have lunch with him, but I, of course, said no. Actually, I said “No, Daddio”.’ Margot laughed. ‘Everything all right in the house? Did you find the stuff?’

‘Yeah, I found … the stuff,’ said Wesley with a smile. I sighed deeply while he lifted his bag to show Margot what he had collected.

‘Great. Shall we go then?’ she said.

‘We’re ready,’ I said. ‘But are you? You look nice –’

‘Sunday best!’ said Margot brightly. She unbuttoned her woollen navy coat and showed us her clean white knee-length dress underneath. She wore her shiny black school shoes.

‘But it’s not really practical for The Outback and the factory, is it? After what happened to you yesterday …’

‘Yeah, you need overalls and kneepads,’ said Wesley.

‘No, it’s cool. I know what I’m doing now. I’ll be fine.’

‘You sure … Angel?’ asked Wesley. He stifled a laugh. ‘I mean you do look like an angel in that white dress, don’t you?’

Margot and I exchanged confused looks, but she smiled. ‘Yeah, I’m sure,’ she said, shutting her front door and taking her keys from my hand.
